Early Anthropic Investors See Billions in Gains Ahead of Public Listing

Valuations for prominent backers of the AI lab have surged significantly, with some holdings reaching multi-billion dollar figures before the company's anticipated debut on public markets.

The impending public listing of Anthropic is poised to generate substantial wealth for a specific cohort of early and late-stage investors.

As the company moves toward an expected valuation of up to $2 trillion, the stakes held by various venture capital firms and individual backers have already accumulated enormous value. Even at the most recent private market valuation of $965 billion, the holdings of key supporters total billions of dollars, according to data reported by Bloomberg. This trajectory suggests that the upcoming initial public offering will likely serve as a major liquidity event for these entities.

Eric Schmidt, the former chief executive of Google, exemplifies the potential for outsized returns from early engagement. He participated in the Series A round in 2021, when the startup was valued at $461 million, based on PitchBook data. Currently holding approximately one percent of the company, Schmidt’s stake is valued at nearly $10 billion at the current private valuation.

Later-stage investors have also realized significant appreciation in their positions. Iconiq Capital provided $6 billion during the previous year, at a time when the company’s valuation stood at $183 billion. This investment has since grown to $17 billion, with analysts suggesting it could double upon the completion of the IPO. Similarly, Menlo Ventures, which led the Series D funding, has committed more than $1 billion over time. Their current holding is estimated at $14 billion.

Other major players have entered the fold more recently or through specific rounds. Sequoia Capital made its first investment earlier this year, contributing $3 billion when the company was valued at $380 billion. This purchase secured roughly one percent ownership, effectively doubling the firm's capital within a short period. Meanwhile, Sound Ventures, established by Guy Oseary and Ashton Kutcher, invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C. The firm subsequently added $400 million to its position, resulting in a stake now worth billions. It is noted that Kutcher departed Sound Ventures this year to establish a new venture capital firm.

Spark Capital holds a unique position as the only venture capital firm known to possess a board seat at the company. Its initial investment of $75 million in the 2023 Series C, when the valuation was $5 billion, has expanded more than ninetyfold to an estimated $7 billion. These figures illustrate the rapid wealth generation occurring within the artificial intelligence sector.

The convergence of high private valuations and an imminent public listing creates a distinct financial landscape for these backers. While the final IPO price remains to be determined, the current metrics indicate that the transition to public markets will solidify these gains. For the investors involved, the next few months represent a critical period for realizing the full potential of their long-term commitments to the leading AI lab.
