A federal investigation into an alleged plot against a North Texas congressman is drawing scrutiny as new information surfaces regarding the suspect's background and intended target. Authorities have arrested a 17-year-old from McKinney, accusing the minor of planning an assassination attempt against Representative Keith Self.

The arrest, which took place on October 5, was made by the FBI. Self's campaign team learned of the apprehension through U.S. Capitol Police the following day, on October 6. According to campaign officials, investigators indicated they believe the teenager had been radicalized and was under monitoring by federal agents prior to the incident.

Investigators also informed the campaign that the individual was planning a terrorist attack on behalf of ISIS. The specific date targeted for the attack was October 17, during a chili cook-off fundraiser for veterans, an event that was scheduled to feature former Dallas Cowboys players and other high-profile guests. United Monitor has reached out to the FBI Dallas office for additional details but has not yet received a response.

Self, who represents Texas' third congressional district and is currently campaigning for a third term, stated that his team adjusted its security posture upon learning of the threat. He noted that while he already had security measures in place, the situation required an increase in vigilance as early voting continues across the state.

The congressman described his reaction to the news as measured, attributing this composure to his background. "Having deployed into combat zones several times, I'm happy it happened to me because people that have never dealt with this before tend to freak out when somebody tells you that somebody's trying to kill you," Self said. He added that his wife, who spent 25 years as a military spouse, is taking the situation very seriously.

Despite the alleged plot, Self confirmed that he attended the scheduled event as planned. He reported judging 19 different chilies and three pots of beans, stating that nothing occurred during the gathering. He has also continued his campaign activities, including poll greeting, asserting that the incident will not deter him from his work.

The arrest occurs amidst the congressman's ongoing efforts against Sharia law. In September, he introduced a nonbinding resolution opposing the implementation of Sharia law in the United States. The district includes McKinney, where a contentious debate over a mosque expansion led to a unanimous city council approval in August, followed by an effort to recall council members.

Evan Hunt, Self's opponent in the midterm election, also addressed the situation, condemning the alleged assassination plot in a social media post. The identity of the teenager has not been publicly released as the investigation continues.
