Tesla's Subscription Count Ties to Musk's Pay Deal

Tesla's reported number of FSD subscriptions is calculated using a method that aligns with the company's CEO performance award.

Tesla reports having 1.74 million active subscriptions for its Full Self-Driving software, marking a 67% increase from the previous year. This figure represents the company's official count of users for its advanced driver-assistance technology.

A footnote in the Q3 2026 shareholder letter provides the reasoning behind this number: it follows the methodology outlined in the '2025 CEO Performance Award' and 'includes both upfront payment and monthly subscriptions.' This means customers who purchased FSD as a one-time license for as much as $15,000 are counted as active subscribers, as long as their vehicle remains active. The only group excluded from this count is users on free trials.

This method of counting is directly linked to the milestones Elon Musk must achieve to receive compensation under his 2025 pay package. One of the operational targets for that award is reaching 10 million active FSD subscriptions. The same counting logic applies to Tesla's cumulative vehicle delivery total of 10.2 million, which includes unsupervised Robotaxis placed into commercial operation to align with another pay package milestone concerning 20 million vehicles.

Tesla also states that more than 75% of new vehicle deliveries in North America included FSD subscriptions during the third quarter of 2026, describing it as 'a nearly twenty percentage point sequential increase.' The company attributes this high adoption rate to the technology's role in stimulating demand in markets where it is available.

However, Tesla does not define the 75% figure in its letter. It does not clarify whether this number includes subscriptions started with an introductory offer or how many of those buyers remain subscribed after a few months. While the main active-subscription metric excludes free trials, the company does not specify if the same rule applies to this attach rate calculation.

Tesla stopped offering FSD as a one-time purchase in February 2026, meaning new customers can only access it through a $99 monthly subscription in the US. Despite this, Tesla has not disclosed how many of the 1.74 million counted users are on a monthly plan versus a one-time purchase. The company added 260,000 net subscriptions in the third quarter, its highest quarterly increase to date.

At that recent pace, reaching the 10 million subscription goal for the pay package would take approximately eight years. Using the average rate of growth from the last 12 months, which is about 700,000 per year, the milestone would be closer to 12 years away. The award period extends to 2035.

As of June 30, 2026, Tesla considered only one of the operational milestones for the pay package to be probable: reaching 20 million total vehicle deliveries. The other targets include 10 million active FSD subscriptions, 1 million Optimus robots, 1 million robotaxis in commercial operation, and adjusted EBITDA targets. A top comment on the original article highlights that under a change of control, such as a potential merger, all compensation plan metrics would be considered vested and achieved.

The core issue remains how Tesla defines and presents its user numbers. Counting users who bought the software outright is not inaccurate, as those vehicles do have the technology. However, presenting this combined total as active subscriptions, a metric aligned with a pay package definition, makes it difficult to gauge the ongoing business performance. The company has not shared how many of its reported 'subscribers' are on the current $99 monthly plan.
